Crime in the Nepali Diaspora: A Trend or a Blip?

Mamta Kafle isn’t the first Nepali speaking woman to be murdered by her husband in the United States.

She’s not even the first of the year.

In 2024 alone, three women from the Nepali speaking community have been allegedly killed by their Nepali partners.

In the morning of Feb 21, 2024, James Rimal reported his wife, Chandra Maya, missing to Cuyahoga Falls police near Akron, Ohio. Police searched the home and surrounding areas and found Chandra Maya’s body 5 miles away in a wooded area.

According to the police, the couple got in an argument where James killed Chandra by strangulation. Afterwards, he “transported her body to a wooded area, and left it hidden in the wooded area in an attempt to conceal his crime.”

James was charged with murder, strangulation, domestic violence and others. In June, he hung himself while in custody awaiting trial.

On July 17, Sada Dhimal and Tika Dhimal, an ethnic Nepali couple, were found dead in their home in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. When police arrived at their house, they found the door left open.

They went through the house and found Tika Dhimal, 40, in the master bedroom on the second floor. Authorities would later confirm she died from multiple wounds to her head, neck, and arm.

Her husband, Sada Dhimal, 50, was found in the backyard. He had hung himself. Their three children, ages 8, 14, and 16, were all found at the home unharmed.

Police have yet to comment on why Sada Dhimal committed this horrific act.

Mamta’s disappearance has been well-publicized now. Mamta Kafle officially went missing on July 31 from her home in Manassas Park, Virginia. After nearly three weeks of investigation, authorities arrested her husband, Naresh Bhatt, accusing him of killing his wife.

As Nepalis keep spreading throughout the world, we need to be aware of incidents like these. Immigrating to another country causes serious financial and mental stress, even for successful immigrants. We need to provide resources for individuals and families so that they have a support network to fall back into.

Thankfully, its times like these when we see the amazing power of Nepalis.

A GoFundMe campaign set up for her daughter has already raised more than $200,000. Through domestic and international efforts, Mamta’s mother has already been granted an emergency visa to visit and take custody of her grand daughter.
