Murder-Suicide of Nepali Couple in Ohio

Sada Dhimal and Tika Dhimal, a Nepali ethnic couple were found dead on Wednesday morning at their family home in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. According to the 911 report, the front door to the home was open when police arrived at 8:37 AM.

Tika Dhimal, 40, was found in the master bedroom on the second floor with lacerations to her head. Her husband, Sada Dhimal, 50, was found in the backyard, dead reportedly by suicide. Investigators also recovered a large knife and a scarf stained with what appeared to be blood. Three children, ages 16, 14, and 8 years old were found at the home unharmed.

Initial police comments indicate a possible murder-suicide.

Reynoldsburg has a high number of Nepali speaking residents, particularly from the Nepali-Bhutanese diaspora. In 2019, the city estimated it had around 7,500 Nepali-Bhutanese residents. The community’s large presence even helped elect the first Nepali-Bhutanese elected official in the US, Bhuwan Pyakurel, to the Reynoldsburg City Council in 2020.

Officials have started investigations. We’ll keep you updated on the progress.

🇺🇳 Kata gaye ra ke padhe: In 2080/81, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issued 100,000+ No Objection Certificates (NOC) to Nepali students across 66 countries. The most popular destinations were Japan, Canada and Australia, and the most popular degrees were Japanese Language, Management and Business.

🗳️ NAV Election Controversy: A recently held election by Nepalese Association in Victoria (Australia) is in the middle of a controversy, after one of the Vice-President candidates, accused NAV of including students as permanent members. He also alleged that technical difficulties made it difficult for all members to vote. NAV acknowledged the technical difficulties but maintained that the elections were conducted in a free and fair manner.

🇺🇸 Consulate in Dallas: Nepalese Society Texas (NST) met with PM Oli to request a new Consulate in Dallas, Texas. Whether or not this will happen is not clear. As of 2024, the Nepali population in North Texas, including Dallas, was estimated to be around 40,000.

🖼️ Mithila Museum in NYC: Amit Pratap Shah, Founder and President of Mithila Center USA, announced plans to open the Museum of Mithila Heritage in New York. Mithila Center USA will lead this project in collaboration with community leaders, artists and cultural organizations.

🇧🇩 Bangladesh ma aatanka: 1,200 Nepali students have returned to Nepal as a result of violent protests going on in Bangladesh. Protestors are demanding that the government end a quota system for relatives of army veterans. Around 3200 Nepali students are enrolled in Bangladeshi colleges.

The 16-year old Nepali earning $12,000 per month

16-year old Sam Kadel is generating $12,000 a month from his business.

Sam is no ordinary teenager.

• 11 years old: Started learning to program in HTML, CSS, JS and PHP.

• 14 years old: Successfully applied to study information services at the University of New England.

• 14 years old: Launched guitar tutoring business

• 16 years old: Accepted to a bachelor of commerce program at the University of New South Wales.

Sam developed a keen interest in search engine optimization (SEO) while he was trying to grow his guitar tutoring venture. SEO is the process of getting websites to show up at the top of the search results page.

Sam started applying what he learnt and his tutoring business started to take off. So, he decided to offer his SEO expertise and opened his own agency.

Sam is currently making between $10,000 to $12,000 per month.

He says his biggest challenge is getting people to take him seriously.

And his biggest goal? To be the youngest Forbes 30 for 30 entrant.

Mountain Queen: Available on Netflix July 31, 2024

Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa a documentary about 10-time Everest summiteer Lhakpa Sherpa, will stream on Netflix on July 31. Lhakpa was the first Nepali woman to survive her Everest summit. Although Pasang Lamu was the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest, she tragically died on her way down to basecamp.

Some facts about Lhakpa:

✷ Emigrated to America where she survived partner violence
✷ Worked as a cashier at Whole Foods
✷ Her brother and sister have summited Everest multiple times
✷ All three siblings summited together in 2003 (first summit by 3 siblings)

🧮 Math Olympiad: Kritesh Dhakal and Shreyash Sharma Bastola have each won an “Honorable Mention” in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2024 held in the UK. Kritesh and Shreyash were selected from 3000 students across Nepal for the competition. Nepal has been participating in the competition since 2017.

🏩 Ambika Shrestha Passes Away: Notable hotel entrepreneur, Ambika Shrestha, passed away on Thursday Morning. Originally from Sikkim, Shrestha married Dwarika Das Shrestha, a successful entrepreneur from Kathmandu. Together, they opened Dwarika’s Village Hotel (now Dwarika’s Heritage Hotel). During her life, Ambika Shrestha received multiple individual honours, including the Order of Civil Merit, from King Juan Carlos I of Spain.

🚎 ICT Nepali Diaspora Award: Nominations are now open for the 9th edition of the ICT Awards. The ICT awards honours individuals, startups and organizations for outstanding achievements in the Information and Communications Technology. For Nepalis living outside Nepal, there is a separate category - Nepali Diaspora Award. Past winners include, Dr. Suresh Manandhar, CEO of Wiseyak, and Prasanna Dhungel, Co-Founder of GrowByData. 📣 Oli Vs Kul Man Ghising: PM Oli and Director of NEA, Kul Man Ghising are in a standoff regarding non-payment of electricity by six companies. Although the NEA offered a plan to settle past dues, some companies refused to pay without proof. PM Oli stepped in and verbally directed NEA to resume supply. The NEA has refused to do anything until it receives written instructions.

🛣️ Source launa khojya aarop: Deputy Speaker, Indira Rana Magar (RSP), has come under fire for writing a letter to the US Embassy to postpone visa dates for six people, including herself. Ruling and opposition parties criticized her for directly corresponding with the embassy without going through official channels, and for including names unrelated to the government.

☠️ Ex-State Minister Murdered: Former MP Ramchandra Raya was brutally killed in Sarlahi by an unknown group using sharp weapons. Raya, 80, was struck on the head while he was asleep at home. According to a domestic worker, three people had spent the night at Raya’s place. The motive for the murder is still unknown. Police are still investigating the crime.

👑 Gold High: The price for fine gold increased by Rs 2,000 to reach a historic high of Rs. 1,49,800 per tola on July 17. This increase is not just isolated to Nepal. Data from the World Gold Council shows that average gold price increased from USD 820 per tola in Aug 2020, to USD 965 in July 2024. JP Morgan expects the price to keep increasing till the end of this year.

💰 1.25 Arba Investment: Global College Group has secured a 1.25 Arba (USD 9.3 million) investment from Nepal Life Insurance in anticipation of its upcoming IPO at the end of the year. Founded by Khagendra Ojha, the education group includes Global College, Uniglobe College and four other educational properties.

🚀 KTM-Dubai $100 ma: Wizz Air, a low-cost airline operating from Abu Dhabi, has submitted a proposal to operate flights for a one-way cost of Rs 13,000 (USD ~$100). The airline plans to launch this service from Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairawa. Like other airlines, it has also requested the government to exempt them from paying VAT.

👨‍⚕️ Baideshik Rojgari: Israel has agreed to recruit 2,000 Nepali workers as caregivers. Previously, Israel had limited recruitment to 800 workers. At a meeting between Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, and the Sharat S. Bhandari and Israeli Ambassador, Hanan Godder, they also discussed possibility of taking workers for agricultural work as well.

🚎 EV Investigation: The Department of Revenue is investigating several Chinese electric vehicle brands for tax evasion. A team raided Cimex Inc, the local distributor for BYD. Of the total EV imports in 2023, a third came from China. Nepal imported 7,931 units of EVs from China, accounting for 69% of total EV imports.

ANA National Convention 2024

The Association of Nepalis in the Americas (ANA) held their annual convention in San Francisco from July 19 to July 21. The event included a cultural show, football tournaments, forums on immigration and many other mini-events. Singers James Pradhan, Sashikala Moktan and Juna Prasai sang at the event.

Nepali Jatra in Colorado

Nepali Jatra 2024, an event celebrating Nepal’s culture was held in downtown Longmont, Colorado. The event followed a screening for the Emmy award-winning docu-series “Festivals”. The highlight of the event was honoring Hiranya Bhojpure and Urmila Shrestha for their six decades of dedication to art, music and Literature.
