Nepali Americans favor Trump over Biden

A recent Khasokhas survey of 253 Nepali Americans shows that 61% prefer Donald Trump as the next US president, while 39% support Joe Biden. Although the sample size is extremely small, it’s still striking that a majority preferred Trump.

The recent assassination attempt is likely to increase sympathy for the candidate. Further, in recent weeks, Joe Biden’s age and mental capacity have come under increased scrutiny, which will probably help Trump even more.

😢 Nepali Drowns in Montana: Raju Jha, a 28-year-old engineer from Nepal, drowned in Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, while swimming with friends. Despite rescue efforts, his body was recovered 30 yards from shore. Jha, who lived in Portland, moved to the US in 2019 to obtain his master's degree. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to repatriate his body to Nepal.

🖼️ Mithila Art at UN-HQ: An exhibition showcasing Mithila art to highlight climate change was held at the UN Headquarters. The exhibition is a collaboration between Nepal's Permanent Mission and the Mithila Centre USA.

⚖️ Justice for Nepali Accident Victim: Gurpreet Singh, 32, was arrested and charged with running over a 79-year-old Nepali, Damodar Shrestha. After the accident, Singh fled the scene, swapped cars, and ultimately left the country. He returned to face charges and was ordered to surrender his passport.

"GHAR but in America" has begun filming in Maryland, USA. The show follows a young Nepali woman hiding her relationship from her visiting parents. Created by Bimlesh Adhikari, it features actors Arunima Lamsal and Samaroha Mainali.

🚎 125-Year-Old Uni: The British Education Group (TBEG), which owns The British College in Kathmandu, has acquired a 125-year-old Canadian college in Canada called the Maritime Business School. Founded in 2003 by Nepalese entrepreneurs Rajen and Mahendra Kandel, TBEF owns education establishments across the UK, UAE, and Nepal.

🙏 Hindu-Buddhist Temple in Canada: The Hindu Buddhist Foundation of Canada, a non-profit started by Nepalis in Canada, is raising funds to buy nearby land to expand the current temple in Surrey, Canada. The nonprofit needs CAD 1.6 million and has raised CAD 320,000 from 128 families. Click here to donate to the cause.

Weekly Briefing: What You Need To Know

🙋🏻‍♂️ Oli ko palo: KP Oli was sworn in as Nepal's prime minister on Monday, his fourth term, becoming the fifth PM in five years. Oli is expected to lead the government for the first 18 months, after which he will hand over the role to Sher Bahadur Deuba. Congress and UML will share 17 of the 21 ministries, with the rest reserved for other parties in the alliance.

🆚 Mukul vs Swarnim: RSP’s drama continued with Mukul Dhakal accusing Swarmin Wagle of trying to make Nepal a province of India. Dhakal was recently permanently removed from his role as RSP's General Secretary. In addition to the India accusation, he also accused Wagle of threatening to beat him up for speaking against RSP.

🛣️ Bato Banau: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has been allowed to continue expanding the pavement at New Road. Although the confrontation officially occurred between KMC and the Department of Roads, the main conflict was between the Mayor and the chairman of Ward 22, Chinkaji Maharjan. Maharjan had removed plants and torn down fences built by KMC.

📈 Badyo Hai: On Sunday, the stock market hit its highest level in almost 26 months, with the NEPSE index rising by 52.97 points to 2257. This is the highest since May 18, 2022. These gains suggest growing investor confidence and resilience in the market, despite the political uncertainty in the country.

⛏️ Mines khojdai: The Department of Mines and Geology approved exploring and excavating 80 mines across Nepal. In addition, the Department has been working with the Chinese government to explore petroleum reservoir areas in Dailekh.

🔋 Batti Bechne Abhiyan: The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) asked the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to sign an agreement to sell 40 MW of electricity. Bangladesh will be the second country after India, where NEA exports electricity. They are currently in talks to sell to China as well.

🤑 Tourists le lyaye dollar: Nepal earned Rs 76.55 billion (USD 572 Million) from tourism in the first 11 months of the fiscal year, surpassing the previous record set in 2019. During this period, Nepal welcomed 1.06 million tourists, who stayed an average of 13.2 days and spent $41 daily.

👑 IMF le dyo paisa: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the release of USD 41.3 million, bringing the total to $247.7 million. The IMF approved the credit facility in 2022 in response to COVID-19 recovery efforts.

⚽️ 🇺🇸 TNSC Cup 2024: Gorkhali Football Club won the 'TNSC Cup Soccer Tournament 2024' in Scarborough, defeating Himalayan Strikers 2-1 in the final. They received $10,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up got $5,000. Fifteen teams from the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding areas participated.

🇨🇳🇳🇵Investment Summit: The Embassy of Nepal in Beijing hosted "Promoting Investment Opportunities in Nepal" to share experiences from the Nepal Investment Summit 2024. The event, attended by over 100 people, included presentations on Nepal’s investment climate and opportunities.
